What is the Role of the Image of Nursing Committee?

Established in 1993, the goal of the Image of Nursing program is to dispel any misconceptions the public may have and the profession of nursing by re-educating them; educating nursing students on how to project a positive image of nursing; and help students understand the meaning of professionalism.

Hello NSNA Members!

I am so excited that you are here! I’m MacKenzie Simmons and I am the 2023-2024 NSNA Imprint Editor and Image of Nursing (ION) Committee Chair. Whether you are an active member of NSNA or new to NSNA, I am pleased to share the NSNA Image of Nursing Committee’s first update with all of you! The Image of Nursing is all about defining what a nurse is.

The committee focuses on redirecting the public view from inaccurate stereotypes of nurses to ones filled with truth and trust, promoting a sense of professional identity for nursing students within their careers as future nurses, and preparing students to have successful endeavors in their jobs as nurses. The goal is to dispel any misconceptions about the image of nurses that the public may have developed and re-educate them on what is true about the profession of nursing. We also educate nursing students on how to promote a positive image of nursing and help students understand the meaning of professionalism on and off the job.

The Image of Nursing Committee has chosen the theme “Beyond the Scrubs” for this year’s theme.

Imprint Photo Submission

Photo Release Form

Stock images of students and healthcare professionals are often used in each issue; however, we would love to utilize Imprint to promote student nurses, with more NSNA members represented  on our pages!  It is very important to keep professionalism and image of nursing in mind when sending photos. (Even if it's just a group of classmates in class or studying together in someone's living room floor.)

A few things to consider:
  • Every person in a photo submitted must sign and submit a Photo Release Form (click above to download the form)
  • Absolutely NO photos of patients (even if they sign a release form)
  • Try to keep corporate logos out of the shot (Coke cans, labels, etc.)
  • If the photo is in a clinical setting, avoid anything with the hospital/clinic name in the background or you will need to submit a release  form from the clinical site itself.

Ideas:
  • Try for "active" photos: rather than everyone  looking straight into the camera, go for more candid shots, such as a classmate looking at the instructor, two students looking at each other and smiling/laughing; a friend doing research on a laptop in the park; the possibilities are endless!
  • Utilize some of the popular smartphone photo apps if you want (Instagram, Hipstamatic, CameraBag), but make sure your quality setting are set to high.

Email your photos to nsna@nsna.org - Attn: Imprint Photo Submission
Fax your signed photo release forms to (718) 797-1186 or scan and attach them to your email.  Be sure to include the name of each person and their school.
