Re: Fall Memo
Hello NSNA members. School is in full swing and I hope everything is going well in your studies. As this semester winds down, I hope that you're all succeeding in your nursing school endeavors!
The NSNA MidYear Conference is fast approaching. I am looking forward to meeting everyone in Reno, NV from November13-16. The BTN Committee has planned a wonderful seminar line up for everyone to enjoy on Friday November 14, 2008 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. We are also honored and please to have a presentation by Kathleen R. Ward, MSN, RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Dept of Nursing, Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS. She will report on the findings from a survey conducted with male NSNA members. We will also incorporate a time where we are able to share and report on BTN projects and goals across our nation. It is my desire that the attendees find the session very informative and inspirational.
Remember, the NSNA has tools to help the BTN committees do their job to help increase enrollments into nursing schools. A video, aimed at teenagers, Nursing-The Ultimate Adventure is available free of charge ($12 for postage and handling) to all official NSNA Chapters* that have BTN committees. If your school is an NSNA constituent, check with the faculty advisor to see if your school has received its copy. (Note: one free video per NSNA constituent will be provided.) The video is also available for purchase for schools that do not have an NSNA chapter.
A colorful pamphlet is also available. Sponsored by Nursing Spectrum, the pamphlet informs young students about how to apply to nursing school, what the requirements are, and what it's like to be a nurse. Each video comes with 100 pamphlets and additional pamphlets are available for purchase. Contact nsna@nsna.org to request an order form.
The NSNA online Career Center is filled with information about nursing careers, schools, financial assistance, and nursing opportunities.
Once you have the video and pamphlets, arrange visits to junior and senior high school classes to show the BTN video and handout the pamphlets. The video presents nursing as a vital, challenging career with limitless professional opportunities. Discuss what it's like to be in nursing school and share your dreams about becoming a registered nurse. The Guidelines for Planning booklet also has ideas for setting up high school nursing clubs and putting together a mini-conference for high school and pre-nursing students.
Be on the lookout for the BTN column in future issues of Imprint. The BTN Committee encourages all BTN projects to incorporate strategies into their current campaigns that will recruit all nontraditional nursing students and especially those "transitional professionals" into the profession.
I'd like to encourage everyone to think ahead and start planning BTN projects. Remember that a BTN project is a great way of addressing the needs of those in need and of addressing the great disparities in the nursing profession. Don't forget to submit your wonderful project for the NSNA's BTN Awards. There will be two $100 BTN awards given out this academic year. An award will be issued to the top state BTN project and one award for the top school BTN project. Be sure to check out the new changes for the BTN Awards and review the award requirements in the NSNA Awards and Honors Booklet. The BTN Committee looks forward to all of your great projects!
Please feel free to contact me at BTNdirector@nsna.org with any questions or concerns.
PS. Tip for an exciting BTN project: use the NSNA video Mentoring -The Experience of a Lifetime to motivate nurses, faculty and students to become mentors and protégés. It describes how to enter into successful relationships; and informs on the qualities needed to make the most of the mentor connection.
